Her Story, Our Mission: Meet Home of Hope Founder Mama Edith

Throughout Women’s History Month, FMSC is excited to celebrate Her Story, Our Mission, a tribute to the women who are making a real difference in the fight against hunger. Women like Mama Edith, founder of Home of Hope in Jinja, Uganda.

Mama Edith gave birth to a son with special needs. Raising a child with special needs is challenging anywhere — but as a single mother in extreme poverty, it seemed impossible. Her family urged her to let him die. When she refused, her family disowned her.

But Mama Edith refused to give up. She saw a future for her son and, soon, other families — overwhelmed by the challenges of raising children with disabilities in extreme poverty — began bringing their children, asking Mama Edith to care for them, too.

And Mama Edith said, “Yes.”

What began as one mother’s determination has grown into a lifeline for 96 children with special needs. Each child at Home of Hope has a unique story, a unique hope. For some, that means receiving full-time assistance with feeding, mobility and therapy. For others, it means accessing education and opportunities once thought impossible — one young woman in the home is earning a college degree online. At Home of Hope, a full life looks different for every child, but it always starts with care, dignity and proper nutrition.

Providing for these children is a daily challenge — but MannaPack® meals make it possible. These meals do more than nourish. Because they are donated, Home of Hope can redirect critical (and limited) funds to medical care, therapy and education. They can transform these children’s futures.

Mama Edith has faced hardship, opposition and setbacks, but she refuses to give up. She continues to say “yes” to children who deserve care, dignity and opportunity. For her dedicated and lifechanging service to some of the most vulnerable in her community, we honor her this month.
