‘Catastrophic hunger’ has doubled in 2024

In 2024, catastrophic hunger has doubled globally, according to a recent report by the World Food Programme. Millions are experiencing extreme levels of food insecurity, with hunger driving families to the brink. The increase in acute food insecurity highlights the urgent need for continued hunger relief efforts. Our partners are working on the front lines to address this crisis, delivering lifechanging meals and support where it’s needed most.

Total population facing Crisis or Emergency levels of food insecurity: 23.4 million

ipc scale

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to be one of the world's largest and most complex hunger crises. Political instability, ongoing conflict and displacement have left more than 23 million people facing high levels of food insecurity.

The situation is expected to get worse, with nearly 4.5 million children at risk of malnutrition by mid-2025. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also highly vulnerable.

Conflict, especially in the eastern regions, has displaced 7.3 million people, cutting them off from their homes and livelihoods.

Even though the DRC is rich in natural resources, it continues to face a devastating cycle of hunger and poverty. The food crisis is made worse by frequent health outbreaks, natural disasters and low farming productivity. Rising prices and a weakened currency have made food even harder to afford for many.

FMSC food supports our partners’ work in the DRC, including:

  • Clean water initiatives
  • Vocational and technical training
  • Women and girls empowerment programs
