Stories of Feeding God's Children Hungry in Body & Spirit
A record-breaking month
Last month, FMSC sent more than 47.3 million MannaPack® meals in 172 shipments to 33 countries around the world. This is more meals in a single month than ever before in FMSC history. Because of you, in November 2023, we shipped enough food to feed 129,648 kids a daily meal for a full year.
In the midst of everything going on in the world, you are responding.
Each meal you pack, fund and pray over equips FMSC partners to do transformative work around the world. Hunger relief is usually just part of what our partners do — but food is the foundation for so much more.
Measuring hunger: IPC Acute Food Insecurity Scale
No single measure can encapsulate the full experience of a community, but they each bring specific insights. This month, we’re highlighting the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Acute Food Insecurity (AFI) Scale.
The IPC analyzes food insecurity and acute malnutrition situations to help global decision-makers inform their emergency responses.
The IPC AFI scale spans five phases:
South Sudan | Africa
The map below shows observed hunger in South Sudan during fall 2023 and how it is predicted to change in the coming months. The orange represents regions in IPC Phase 3: Crisis. The red represents IPC Phase 4: Emergency.
The state of hunger in South Sudan is dire, with 46.3% of the population (5.83 million people) facing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above).
This includes 35,000 people in IPC Phase 5: Catastrophe and 1.64 million people in IPC Phase 4: Emergency. Conflict exacerbated by four years of unprecedented flooding and localized drought has destroyed livelihoods and driven widespread displacement.
Acute malnutrition affects 1.65 million children, with severe malnutrition projected for 480,000 children and 870,000 pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Among the most severely affected regions is Rubkona, “a county where floodwaters have permanently submerged entire communities or trapped them on small islands since 2021.” (World Food Programme).
