About Peru
Officially the Republic of Peru, the country is located in western South America and has an estimated 28 million people living there. Peru borders Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and the Pacific Ocean to name a few. It is home to the ancient Incan Empire and was colonized by Spain in the 16th century. In 1821, Peru achieved independence but has gone through many trials of political turmoil and fiscal crisis. The Republic is a presidential representative democratic republic and is divided into 25 different regions. Peru has a very diverse geography ranging from arid plains to tropical forests in the Amazon Basin. The current poverty rate is close to 50%, however its economy is known for their agriculture, fishing, mining, and manufacturing of products which are sent all over the world and to the United States.
