About Indonesia
The nation is located in Southeast Asia and is the world's largest archipelagic state
comprised of 17,508 islands, with about 6,000 of them uninhabited. Indonesia has a
population of over 234 million people, the majority of whom are Muslim. However,
Indonesia is not officially an Islamic country. The country was controlled by the Dutch
until after World War II when they were able to gain their independence. Since then,
natural disasters, corruption, separatism and economic change has posed problems for the
development of the fairly new independent country. Recently, major disasters have
plagued the country. In 2004, a tsunami killed an estimated 167,736 people on the
northern island of Sumatra. Then, in 2006 the Yogyakarta earthquake rocked the island of
Java. The earthquake killed 5,782, injured 36,299 people, 135,000 houses were damaged,
and an estimated 1.5 million left homeless.
